{"id":14205,"date":"2023-03-21T15:05:26","date_gmt":"2023-03-21T15:05:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/the3dsourced.wpengine.com\/?p=14205"},"modified":"2023-04-11T12:50:27","modified_gmt":"2023-04-11T12:50:27","slug":"clogged-extruder-nozzle-how-to-avoid-and-fix","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.3dsourced.com\/rigid-ink\/clogged-extruder-nozzle-how-to-avoid-and-fix\/","title":{"rendered":"Clogged 3D Printer Nozzle? \u2013 How to Prevent, Clean &#038; Fix"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 3D printing, there&#8217;s little more irritating than a clogged extruder nozzle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When everything seems to be progressing nicely when suddenly you hear a <a data-lasso-id=\"11385\" href=\"https:\/\/www.3dsourced.com\/guides\/extruder-clicking-slipping\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"18996\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clicking or&nbsp;<em>knocking<\/em>&nbsp;sound<\/a> from your extruder motor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You look over and see that your <a data-lasso-id=\"6347\" href=\"https:\/\/www.3dsourced.com\/3d-printers\/best-3d-printer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D printer<\/a> is not extruding, the filament isn\u2019t moving off of the spool and the nozzle is now moving around in thin air above what&#8217;s left of your print.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this guide, we&#8217;ll discuss the<strong> <\/strong>four<strong> most common causes of a clogged nozzle<\/strong> I&#8217;ve found in my years 3D printing, namely:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"#h-incorrect-nozzle-height\">Incorrect nozzle height<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"#h-incorrect-print-temperature\">Incorrect print temperature<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"#h-poor-quality-filament\">Poor quality or &#8220;wet&#8221; filament<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"#h-dust-and-dirt\">Dust and dirt<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ll share my <a href=\"#h-how-to-unblock-a-fully-clogged-print-nozzle\">most effective techniques for each<\/a> of these issues, and the steps I take to <a href=\"#h-an-ounce-of-prevention-our-take-on-how-to-clean-an-extruder-nozzle\">prevent clogging<\/a> before it starts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Not a complete blockage?&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dsourced.com\/rigid-ink\/3d-printer-cleaning-filament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"36139\">Cleaning Filament<\/a> can handle a partial blockage and save you some hassle)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-common-causes-of-a-clogged-print-nozzle-and-how-to-avoid-them\">Why Does my 3D Printer Keep Clogging (and How to Avoid it!)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0714\/6487\/files\/Clogged_nozzle.jpg?v=1484837289\" alt=\"Unblocking a clogged extruder\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A clogged print nozzle is usually caused by&nbsp;<strong>one of several common problems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, even though a clogged print nozzle is one of those \u201cAre you kidding me, really?\u201d issues that everyone dreads, the good news is that the problem can easily be prevented from occurring by simply paying attention to a couple of things beforehand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t worry, we&#8217;ll cover cleaning a <a data-lasso-id=\"6349\" href=\"https:\/\/www.3dsourced.com\/guides\/3d-printer-nozzle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D printer nozzle<\/a> later in the article. This longer distance translates into cooler temperatures. The result is that your material will likely have trouble adhering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0714\/6487\/files\/PETG_Bed_adhesion.jpg?v=1482337912\" alt=\"Bed Adhesion and Nozzle Size\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But if the nozzle is too low, a couple of undesirable things will occur. First, there won\u2019t be sufficient room between the nozzle and the print surface to allow the material to extrude correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will result in the nozzle smearing the thermoplastic all over the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, the insufficient room between the nozzle and the surface will begin to cause retrograde extrusion \u2013 the&nbsp;<strong>material will begin to back up into the nozzle<\/strong>, ultimately causing a clog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0714\/6487\/files\/layer_height_pressure.jpg?v=1484837810\" alt=\"Correct 3D printer nozzle height and pressure for best results to prevent nozzle clogging\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Explained: Getting the nozzle size, height and flow rate right prevents nozzle clogs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The easy fix for this problem is to make sure that your print bed is leveled correctly and that your starting Z coordinates are sufficient to allow adequate room for proper extrusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In general, your Z coordinate should be&nbsp;no higher than the diameter or lower than&nbsp; 1\/4 diameter of your print nozzle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will allow the nozzle to maintain a slight pressure to the top of the extruded <a data-lasso-id=\"6350\" href=\"https:\/\/www.3dsourced.com\/guides\/3d-printer-filament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filament<\/a> which will increase adhesion while avoiding retrograde extrusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-incorrect-print-temperature\">Incorrect Print Temperature<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Correct print temperature is critical for both a successful print run and for printer performance. If the temperature of your hot end is too low, your print material will not melt correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can cause the material to begin to adhere to the inside surface of the nozzle. This causes pressure to build up in the print head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, the extrusion motor can\u2019t feed the filament into the head and before you know it your 3D printer nozzle is clogged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, printing at too high a temperature, especially with PLA, can cause you to experience what is known as \u201cheat creep\u201d. Essentially, heat creep occurs when higher temperatures extend back and upwards from the hot end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0714\/6487\/files\/inaccurate_tempurature.jpg?v=1484819695\" alt=\"Inaccurate Print Tempurature Causing Nozzle Clogs\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This causes the \u201cmelt area\u201d to extend father back as well, softening and melting the print material well before the nozzle end of the extruder. The&nbsp;<strong>softened thermoplastic increases the amount of pressure needed<\/strong>&nbsp;for extrusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As with having your print temperature too low, eventually the extrusion motor can\u2019t keep up and the nozzle gets clogged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In extreme cases of printing at too higher temperatures &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dsourced.com\/rigid-ink\/pla-3d-printing-filament\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"15151\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"6351\">PLA <\/a>and similar filaments can actually crystallize in the nozzle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can avoid this problem by always checking to make sure that you&#8217;re printing at the recommended temperature for the material that you\u2019re using.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PLA does well at temperatures around 180C and up and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dsourced.com\/3d-printer-materials\/abs-filament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"6352\">ABS<\/a> likes temperatures around 225C+. Experiment with the material that you\u2019re using and find the \u201csweet spot\u201d that allows for good adhesion and layering, but doesn\u2019t cause problems like clogging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, when you are changing materials, always make sure that you\u2019ve removed the previous material completely and flushed it through before changing print temperatures. Failure to do so may also cause a clogged nozzle later on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-poor-quality-filament\">Poor Quality or &#8216;Wet&#8217; Filament<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all filaments are created equal. Low-quality filament is not subjected to rigorous tolerance tests. This can result in an end product that has differing widths throughout the filament strand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Segments of the filament that have a thicker diameter will not only take longer to melt, but they will also be more difficult to extrude and may cause a clog, although admittedly this is rare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main cause of poor quality filament and its frequent blocking is what&#8217;s inside the resin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cheaper filler and unintended contaminants lurking inside the material can build up or outright clog inside the nozzle at random intervals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finding that your 3D printer nozzle keeps clogging? It&#8217;s likely down to poor-quality filament.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is an easy way to check the quality of extrusion consistency with the filament that you\u2019re using. Take a pair of calipers and check the diameter of your filament at several different points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re finding significant deviation from the advertised diameter specifications, it might be time to start thinking about obtaining your filament from a different source. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dsourced.com\/3d-printer-materials\/best-pla-filament\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"16273\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"6353\">We recommend the top filament brands here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, if you haven&#8217;t stored your filaments in a cool, dry place away from moisture, they&#8217;ll absorb some of this water vapor over time as they&#8217;re hygroscopic. These &#8216;wet&#8217; filaments are more likely to clog, and generally print worse quality prints with rougher surface finishes from the &#8216;bubbling&#8217; in the filament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can buy filament dryers to dry your wet filament, and also take action by using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dsourced.com\/guides\/3d-printer-filament-storage\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"11701\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"6354\">filament storage<\/a>, or even make yourself a DIY filament dry box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dsourced.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/image-5-3.jpg\" alt=\"Filament storage prevents filament from absorbing moisture, preventing nozzle clogs\" class=\"wp-image-17852\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.3dsourced.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/image-5-3.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.3dsourced.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/image-5-3-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.3dsourced.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/image-5-3-768x384.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dust-and-dirt\">Dust and Dirt<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite your best efforts, dust and dirt can still become adhered to your filament and travel with it down into your hot end. Once there, they burn in the heat of the nozzle and start adhering to the inside surface of the nozzle as carbon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When enough carbon builds up on the inside of the nozzle it can start to narrow the width of the nozzle opening, as well as begin to impede the flow of the print material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The end result can be a clog. We\u2019ll discuss a fix for this problem in the next section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-unblock-a-fully-clogged-print-nozzle\">How to Unclog a&nbsp;3D Printer Nozzle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019ve got a completely clogged print nozzle there are a number of 3D printer nozzle cleaning techniques that you can use to get it unclogged depending on the material that\u2019s causing the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first way that we always recommend for partially blocked nozzles is to use&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dsourced.com\/rigid-ink\/3d-printer-cleaning-filament\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"14239\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"6355\">cleaning filament<\/a>&nbsp;regularly &#8211; however, that won&#8217;t unblock a fully clogged nozzle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at some of these other methods for how to clean a clogged 3D printer nozzle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;ve only got a partial blockage or slight under extruding though, there is a much easier way. Keep reading to learn more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-atomic-or-cold-pull-method\">The Atomic or Cold Pull Method<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a technique that works great if you have a build-up of carbon or carbonized material in your nozzle that\u2019s causing the clog. It also works well if your clog was caused by the switch&nbsp;<strong>from a high temperature to a lower temperature<\/strong>&nbsp;printing material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can check out the specifics of how to use this method by taking a look at our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dsourced.com\/rigid-ink\/under-extrusion-problems-clicking-sounds\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"14236\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"6356\">article on under extrusion problems that&nbsp;can be found here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But generally, if you heat the hotend to 250-260\u00b0C, it will dislodge any stuck materials. Then, allow it to cool, and heat up again to around 115\u00b0C+ and manually push the filament through the nozzle at it heats up to thoroughly dislodge any stuck material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although we find the 3D printer cold pull method to be effective, it&#8217;s very brutal and time-consuming on your machine. Read on to learn about our preventative measures and using 3D printer nozzle cleaner.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-guitar-strings-and-acupuncture-needles\">Guitar Strings and Acupuncture Needles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0714\/6487\/files\/nozzle_unblocking.jpg?v=1488820645\" alt=\"Unblocking a nozzle with guitar strings or acupuncture needles\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Be careful, and try to use a needle the same size as your nozzle, or just under. For example, a 0.35mm or 0.4mm needle will work perfectly in a 0.4mm nozzle, but don&#8217;t use a 0.45mm in a 0.4mm nozzle &#8211; it&#8217;ll never fit.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another method to break out a clog is to essentially break through it using anything strong and narrow.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/ISO-7864-Sterile-hypodermic-needles\/dp\/B000Y2TH58\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1544109534&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=Sterile+Single+Hypodermic+Needles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"6357\">A surgical<\/a>&nbsp;or acupuncture needle or a B or high E steel guitar string all make excellent routers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our favorite nozzle cleaning tool is a hypodermic needle &#8211; you can pick them up quite cheaply online. It goes without saying to just be&nbsp;<strong>really careful using them<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simply heat your hot end up to the printing temperature of the material that\u2019s involved in the clog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using a pair of pliers, carefully insert the needle or guitar string into the nozzle opening and move it back and forth, essentially breaking through and removing the clogged material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-solvent-method\">The Solvent Method<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If the material that is causing the clog is somewhat easily soluble then removing the nozzle and soaking it in the solvent in question can provide a solution to really tough clogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dsourced.com\/rankings\/best-fdm-3d-printer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"6358\">FDM printer<\/a> has a slightly different technique that\u2019s involved when removing a printer nozzle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take a look at your owner\u2019s manual for the specific methods that apply to your printer.&nbsp; Once the nozzle is removed, place it in a container filled with the appropriate solvent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you\u2019re trying to dissolve a clog caused by ABS, you\u2019d place the nozzle in a glass container filled with acetone. Leave the nozzle in the solvent for 24 hours, agitating it every few hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After 24 hours is up, remove the nozzle from the solvent and using a steel guitar string or needle remove as much of the plastic clog as possible.
